It really has been quite something else going through this and i couldn’t ever explain verbally how i felt any better than what i’ve done with the EP. The EP manages to make sense of a lot of stuff. It’s pretty selfish of me in some ways to make this EP, musically i did it for me and no one else, it wouldn’t make the slightest bit of difference if no one liked it, but i hope people do haha. The music is the backdrop to life over the last 3 months and it just so happened to last 6 tracks, anymore than this it would of been a pretty intense listen, i think it is at 22 mins still.

The reason it sounds the way it does is because it is an actual soundtrack to my life. I could of made some wonky beats, or electronic stuff but it wouldn’t of had the same impact or hit the right spot for me. Classical soundtrack music has real instruments so i needed to take it to that level. Granted i got some dope electronic soundtracks ok, but not for some real life shit. Some people might scoff at me taking it back to real instruments but i got all that electronic stuff on my 3rd album and my alter ego Geesus Host has got that sound on lock now.

i know the way music is these days and peoples’ attentions spans are short so at 22 mins i think it’s a good length. Hopefully people will also give the EP a bit of time to sink in, i always say this about my music is it’s not going to be an instantly fulfilling experience! My music gets better with repeated listens, shit it usually takes me time to fully appreciate it myself so i understand. So many times people send me messages saying ‘at first i thought this is ok, then a year later i’m totally hooked on it’.

I was chatting to Conspicuous today on facebook and it’s been a good few years since we spoke. Reminded me about this tune i did for his album so i thought i’ll blog it! Cons is a real dude who gets shit done so i got a lot of respect for him. And his crew The Colony are working on some new material so i cant wait to hear what they got cookin’..

GHOST  ‘A TALE OF LIFE IN VI PARTS’ EP

They say the best music is created in times of hardship. Hardship can be many different things in many different ways but everyone experiences hardship in one way or another over the course of a lifetime.

We all know music has the ability to influence the way people feel and for musicians it can be a way for them to deal with situations in life. Countless artists have produced music reflective of what’s happening around them, inside them, it’s the expression that’s important.

Now we’ve set the scene lets talk about the release..

As an artist Ghost has released 3 albums, multiple EP’s, singles, mix CD’s and remixed the likes of Benny Tones, Nicole Willis, Jehst, The Heavy, Coldcut, Bonobo, Verb T. His music has featured in films, he’s had remixes on PS3 games (The Heavy), he’s DJ’d and toured all over Europe and the UK, played Glastonbury, Hip Hop Kemp and DJ supported the likes of Public Enemy. He regularly gives away music as a thank you to the army of fans who have brought up more than 10,000 copies of his releases over the last 7 years. If you’ve listened to the music or seen any of the hundreds of reviews for those albums you’ll know Ghost has the ability to draw the listener into his multi layered beats and engage them on a deeper level than most. 2nd album ‘Freedom of Thought’ was critically acclaimed and took him out of his straight Hip Hop listenership into a wider audience without sacrificing his trademark melodic beats.

So December 2011, Ghost, now a proud father of 2 boys (one 2 years old and the other 5 months old) heard the news that his love and partner had a rare form of cancer. Although treatable, ahead lies 6 months of treatment and hopefully a happy outcome.

‘A Tale of Life in VI Parts’ was started when it became clear something might be wrong and tracks the emotional journey of contemplating life whilst waiting for results. Taking inspiration from composer Philip Glass, Ghost takes you to deep and dark places but maintains a strength of character throughout its 22 minutes. Heavily orchestrated strings, pianos and drums are the backdrop to the EP giving it a genuine cinematic feel.

‘A Tale of Life in VI Parts’ was made for the listener to enjoy from start to finish without pause, so we highly recommend you find a spot of quiet time in your schedule and turn off your mobile volume, switch the TV off, maybe even grab the headphones and enjoy.

We’re flying Lithuanian Airways and i’m not the best flyer at the best of times, i was glad when 4 hours later we arrived. So we’re picked up and dropped off at the hotel which is TIDY! i had 2 double beds in my room haha. The people who took us out were amazing, so friendly, helpong out in every way and i wish i wasnt so mashed that i could remember them now and thank them for everything.

So they suggest we go have a look at the place we’re playing before we eat on the friday, we were playing on the saturday night, as the mini van gets close we see loads of people walking to this place, we were thinking it was just a small thing. So we get there and we’re ushered by security backstage amid hoards of people, it was an outdoor festival in an amphitheatre and was RAMMED.

i shit myself then and there almost, so we have a drink and leave pretty bewildered. the next day we do soundcheck and everything is all good, we rcoked out the crowd in the short time we had, Kash even learning a little Lithuanian to get the crowd on side worked a treat, even i did his back up vocals. I was so nervous i was fully pissed by the time we played but held it together.

After we played we were taken backstage where we were interviewed live on Lithuanian TV and that was weird haha.

Then they took us to some club at which point i can only remember we did an impromptu set of an hour rocked it the fuck out then i was totally pissed, it must of been 5am by that point and we were taken back to the hotel.

I remember when me and Kashmere got back to the UK we were walking down Brixton saying did that just happen? That was some crazy shit, and believe me it was. Very memorable and i’ll always remember the hospitality they treated us with, if they happen to read this thanks again for an amazing weekend.

My apologies for being on a long ting, to say i’ve had a busy few months would be a massive understatement. So here is my first proper show of 2012, I edited out as much talking and adverts as i had time to do.

For the show i decided to do the 1st hour classic golden age Hip Hop, the 2nd hour was a mix of new (ish) UK Hip Hop, some juke, jungle and then some UK Bass stuff to finish off the show. All of the mixes were just free styled as i always do just trying to get in a zone and see where it takes me.

So back with another remix for you lot, this was done around the same time as the Slum Village x Ghost remix which has now reached it’s download limit so grab them while you can, i won’t be re-uploading!

Anyway i was in the states years back and i traded some vinyls for the Gods Son acapella vinyl, Nas was and is still in my top 3 G.O.A.T so to have some acapellas to work with was amazing.

I built this pretty epic beat, epic in a sense it had loads of bagpipes and shit in it and was some old scottish record i think. I chopped the samples into tons of pieces and replayed everything. Anyway i hope you enjoy this one, bring the Braveheart out in you!

So i did this edit way back when, in say 2005. Was floating on my old drive and i thought it’s a pretty decent little effort so lets just let some people enjoy it. I remember happy the vocals were so in key with the beat cause aint nothing worse when you hear a remix and some shit is out of key.

Just caught up on this guy and i’m glad i did. First caught my attention with his feature ’Brand New Guy’ on the ASAP Rocky album. Funnily enough as i was writing this post Pitchfork came up on my twitter feed saying the new Schoolboy track feat ASAP Rocky was the hottest track of the day. He has a hint of Freestyle Fellowship about his, must be an L.A thing.

Kashmere Verb T and Ghost live at Kung Fu 15th June 2004..

Here is an exclusive and pretty rare piece of audio from 2004.. This was recorded live at the infamous Kung Fu nights that were held at the Underworld in Camden, London. Without doubt this was the biggets Hip Hop night in London whilst it ran, which from my smoked out awful memory would be 3 or 4 years? I’m sure someone can straighten that out for me.

Everyone who was anyone in UK Hip Hop played Kung Fu, and it was something everyone wanted to do. On a Weds night it was all about the nightbus home and 3 hours sleep up for work the next day! Some great times indeed, when it shut the Hip Hop scene in London wasn’t quite the same, and Mr Bongo’s was far behind either.

Verb T, Kashmere and myself performed at Kung Fu upon the release of there double LP/CD Backhand Slaptalk / Technical Illness for Lowlife Records, I’d not long had Ghost Stories released and suggested we all do shows together to promote everything we were releasing, strength in numbers. This was one of the first show’s we’d done properly together, and apart from one out of beat mix i did early on it was a tight show considering how little practice we did!! I also remember being really nervous before going on stage and having quite a few drinks to calm my nerves, that would explain the dodgy beginning! But we always managed to pull off great shows. When we rehearsed hard for a show we would smash the place up..

Great memories for me and the guys, i thought it was a good time to share this with the world so here you go. Listen and enjoy, feel free to spread it around. The most important part of the story is that we became great friends from doing all the shows together. It was never forced upon anyone of us to be involved, we had a lot of fun touring and that showed when we played, you can hear them cracking jokes and that happened for the next 4 years!! Not to mention us all working on each other’s projects, special times.
